Worthing Rd, Horsham

A traditonal scheme created to complement a traditional looking house. A blank canvass that enabled the garden to be split down the middle with a dramatic Oak pergola which provides great framed views to the other garden areas beyond. Circular lawns help to provide the illusion of more space with the shed painted to create a simple focal point at the end of the stepping stone path. SImple but effective.

We bought our property  in central Horsham in the middle of 2018.  The 19th Century cottage (which had formerly been the gardener’s house for the nearby Tanbridge Estate) had been substantially extended in 2016 but the rear garden was just lawn, two trees and an insubstantial and impractical deck.   Our hope was to take this blank canvas and transform it into something that created both interest and screening from the surrounding properties, where we could enjoy sitting quietly and entertaining friends and family.  The front drive needed to be resurfaced and some landscaping added to create interest.   We had no idea how to realise our aspirations.

Alex Bell was one of three designers we consulted. We were immediately impressed with his approach and ideas. He listened carefully to our requirements and produced an outline plan that captured what we were after and also the potential for things that we could not have conceived of.  We were particularly impressed with the way he was able to incorporate features and finishes from our period property, such as the bricks on the garden shed and an oak pergola within the overall scheme.   His design also integrated our large glassed indoor dining area with the patio and into the garden beyond.  The lighting effects he planned were a lovely feature.

In addition to creating a detailed design and budget, Alex project managed both  the selection of a contractor for the hard landscaping work and oversaw the work at all stages.  He sourced and undertook all the planting personally.  Throughout he communicated regularly and effectively and remained focussed on the budget that we had agreed.  He prepared a detailed file of all the plants to help us take care of it all and has been back to check on us !

Less than six months in,  and our first summer, we have been absolutely delighted with the garden and enjoying the various areas that have been created to full effect.” Greg Andrews
