Ham Cottage, Hammingden Lane, Highbrook, Ardingly, East Sussex, RH17 6SR

The present owners bought the derelict 18th century cottage in 1976. After restoring the house they set about expanding the original quarter acre into eight acres of a ‘mini Wakehurst’. In the Summer, near the house, colour bursts from everywhere. A stream flows through a large bog garden then passing the winter garden with fragrant daphne bholua and hellebores, falls over waterfalls into a bluebell carpeted wood. Above the arboretum there is another area of woodland with an old sandstone quarry which has been transformed into a natural amphitheatre, often used for plays and concerts. There are many sculptures and mechanical contraptions throughout the garden giving further interest.
