A Retreat for Weeds

Round 1 Channel 4’s The Great Garden Challenge, 2005

A garden show shown on Channel 4 television. Professional garden designers competed against each other to design a garden and then build the garden  in 3 days. The competition was judged by TV Gardeners, Chris Beardshaw,  James Alexander Sinclair, Bunny Guiness, Ann-Marie Powell and Jack Flowers. For this project I teamed up with a talented and inspiring colleague, Claire Pritchard. Throughout we gained much praise and comment with our individual design style and innovative ideas.

Our first garden was inspired by the beauty of our native flora and  the human  obsession with controlling our natural surroundings. Using recycled materials and plants we call ”weeds”  this garden was designed to show how you can still use the many things we throw away.

Judges comments included:

“One of the top three gardens that stood out from the 64 gardens in the first round” –  Ann-Marie Powell.

“Brilliant” – Chris Beardshaw

“A very clear winner” – Chris Beardshaw
